On Day 4, my dad and I finally had a chance to grab some Korean food. My dad wasn't nearly as excited as I was for it, but I was just happy to have any sort of Korean food. I have to say, it wasn't the best Korean food I have had abroad but I was still happy either way.
Then, after a day full of touristy things such as going to the Borough market, going to Tate Modern, etc we went over to Hakkasan where I have made a reservation a week beforehand.
As soon as we sat ourselves down in this extremely hip and trendy restaurant, we didn't really know what to do with ourselves. One of the hardest parts about dining in London has been gauging the portions. In some places, I felt like the portion sizes have been appropriate. More often than not, however, the portion sizes have been rather small.
So, we talked to this nice father-son pair that was sitting next to us and turns out they are American! They told us how many dishes they ordered... quite a lot but warned us that they are huge eaters and that we would not need to order nearly as much. And boy were they right!
We ordered jasmine smoked pork ribs pictured below. That is an "appetizer" portion... Looking at it, I was worried that it would be too sweet, but it struck a nice balance between sweet and savory. I also loved the smokiness of it all. Yummmm!
Due to a strong recommendation of the crispy duck salad by the father-son pair that was seated next to us, we proceeded to order one. (pictured below) The crispiness of the duck was divine, along with the very light dressing of the salad and the pieces of grapefruit.. (I may or may not have a weak spot for grapefruits..)
My dad suggested that we get cocktails because 1) it's our last dinner in London together 2) the restaurant was very trendy. Did I object to that idea? Not at all. I got a litchi martini. Boom, delicious!
And my classy father got a vodka tonic. I do not know why he went for vodka instead of gin.. but he said that he just likes the clean-ness of vodka. I guess I can accept that answer..
For our "main course" sized dish, we got poached shrimp with coconut curry. At this point, my dad and I were already full with our smaller portioned dishes. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. And since we ordered curry, we thought it would be necessary to get rice to go with it as well so we ordered the simplest veggie fried rice.
End result? Delicious meal with a very interesting chic dinner experience, with a lot of fried rice left over.
All in all, a great dinner experience!
